Big name, big area, HUGE accomplishment!
Recently, the United States president, President Barack Obama, announced that he will not double, but guadruple the Hawaii Monument - creating the world's largest protected marine area. At nearly four times the size of California, Papahānaumokuākea covers 582,578 square miles of the Hawaiian Islands.
This is great news for this largely diverse marine ecosystem - now it can thrive without the threat of over-fishing or destruction of coral reefs. We all must work together to create a better ocean not only for ourselves, but for all of the creatures that inhabit it - and this is a HUGE start!
